Christmas 2012

A Hint of Christmas at 158 North Ocean Avenue

A great link about real life designer expectation....

New Item
A source of mine just sent me an email with a link to this great article that is on the apartmenttherapy blog.  I really enjoyed the article and feel it puts these great home and garden shows in real perspective.

A few things that I could add to the commentary in the article are:  a good designer has gone to school for design and knows the history and classic architectural order, which is the basis for all western design.  A good interiors designer has studied construction and materials and has excellent spaceplanning knowledge and skills.  Anyone else should, in my opinion, not be considered a designer,  but could maybe be considered an "interior stylist".

A customer of mine called me an interior decorator and then quickly apologized for it.  I let him know that I didn't mind what he called me as long as I get the job.

Any way here's the link.  Enjoy the article.

Amethyst

The color for fall is amethyst.
I had the opportunity to visit the San Diego International Flower Market and found these large and glorious hydrangeas.  This amethyst range of color is wonderful and rich.   Rich burgundy to a burnt green color they're so spectacular.

More from my home....

Our home is a studio house much like a studio apartment,  it is simple and warm and full of love.  Love of family, love of my spouse and love for what I do, design.
Our table for two, the base is a Hendredon piece and the top was made for me by my husband.  A grey linen textile, which I bought at a Paris Flea Market, drapes across it.  Naturally shed antlers are another of my husband's finds.  Like a little boy he loves to bring home found objects from his excursions.  Crystal candle sticks and a silver serving tray add the feminine details.  The best rooms, to my eye, always mix the masculine with the feminine.
We have done nothing with the floors which is a montage of several types. Could be worse though, we did rip out hunter green carpeting at move in.
Shades of grey always work to create a serene, and warm environment.  My absolute favorite.
The card is an anniversary card from my husband's Mom (love her), a little boy in his dingy kissing a girl.  Later I'll post the photo I have of Craig at eight years of age in his first boat, a dingy .
My home is full of photographs.   Here is my Grandmother Amalia.
The empty nest...is real simple.

The Fourth of July in Cayucos

Subtle Greys and Navy
Stars and Stripes
The Shop was ready for this 4th of July.   I dressed it as everyone was dressed in celebration of our Country's Birthday.  There's nothing like a parade in a small town like Cayucos it shows a town's pride and it's sense of humor.  My favorite float:  the  men's synchronized swimmers!
And all the children dressed in their red, white and blue.
The town starts setting up their folding chairs on the parade route down Ocean Avenue two day before... love it!

Pasadena Flea Market

The first stall that caught my eye is Miscellany Vintage.  This vendor has French pieces to mid century modern.  The bright colors are fantastic.
My sister, Mary and I were immediately drawn to these mid century end tables.  This one was the exact style of two my parents had in our home growing up less the bright yellow.  Theirs was a blond wood finish.
Very French!
A piece that should have come home with me!
I'm drawn to French greys, bright colors and industrial chic and love to combine them.  This stall is Create a Vision.
The beauty of this color on furniture is that is both tranquil and happy!
My Sis, je luv da!

This piece would make a big statement in a room with mostly neutrals - Love it!
My niece, Danielle found this darling cradle.
Johnny also found some things of interest.

Outing to The Flea Market

I'm on the train, again.  Going down the coast and headed to the Pasadena Flea Market with my sister tomorrow morning. I'm in search of great finds like these.  The beauty and my preferred style at home is the minimalism I find in rooms like this one.  Classic pieces with a patina but used sparingly.  It's so refreshing.
Stay tuned for some photos from the market.

My Favorite 2013 Colors

Photo via hipparis

The past month has been incredibly busy for me.  The start up of this new retail space and design studio has really taken off.  I have had the good fortune of finishing a house design in Sonoma County, designing a living room in Morro Bay, a kitchen and bath in San Simeon and a complete redesign of a house in the Cloisters.  All wonderful projects!  But today I’m on the train headed to San Diego with time to write a new blog.

Color Trends are set by a group of experts that define what will be available to the fashion houses, the home goods industry and the automobile industry.   This group of experts usually head to Milan and Paris for inspiration.  Milan is the epicenter for all new design. The Italians have never been afraid of color. The French do what ever they dam well feel like, just one of the things that I love about France.

During the depth of this horrible, no good recession the trend was black, white, grey and other neutrals because material things were not easily replaced and therefore the vast majority of us needed longevity in our purchases for our homes and clothing.  I use grey quite a bit because of French design which has inspired me since I studied the history of architecture and interiors at San Diego State University.  In 2012, as we pull out of this economic down turn, the trend is very bright bold, color and color blocking.  Which can be done keeping the canvas of the room neutral with splashes of color or putting the color blocks on your walls or your cabinets. The way I like to introduce it in my studio/shop is in the textiles.

The colors for 2013 are a bit more clear and bright.  Bright pink, true yellows, aqua, peach, a crisp orange, bright blue, turquoise green, yellow green, pure green, grey, and lots of white.

Our Home

Before
After

Our nest is empty now.   It's tiny but very comfortable.  We bought an old fisherman's cottage near at the coast and with a limited budget I am working to make it cozy for the two of us and for the family to enjoy with us when they fly home to visit.  As the work on the house progresses I'll share with you glimpses of it so that you can see the progress.

The Shop is Open

Please come in...
..and see what you can pick up for gifts or maybe an item or two for your own home.

Design is now a blend of re purposed pieces like this occasional table blended with new ones which always help keep the budget in check. Outdoor fabrics, like these displayed as flags, can update and refresh an outdoor space.  They are, also, a good choice to use indoors for a beach house do to the high use these outdoor fabrics can sustain. Remember that outdoor textiles can be sprayed off with a garden hose.

It has been a wonderful process selecting the town where I wanted to open my shop and I am so incredibly happy and feel very blessed to be open and in business in this beautiful beach resort town of Cayucos, California.
Thank you, Fred Harpster and Kevin Mulholland of Residential Custom Builders for your support and a special thank you to the people of Cayucos, as well as Morro Bay and Cambria, for your incredible response to Greywood Home and Garden's presence here.
